Antenatal Classes Norwich

Antenatal classes are run by trained teachers who help you and your birth partner prepare for labour, birth and becoming a parent both physically and emotionally as well as practically. Caring for and feeding your newborn baby is also included ensuring you feel more informed, confident and prepared for the journey into parenthood.

Classes are normally held once a week in the evening for around two hours and we may also include a weekend session. Total length of courses varies between 12 and 16 hours as we offer a range of formats and venues around Norfolk and Suffolk. Courses include a reunion which gives us the opportunity to meet up again once all the babies have arrived.

As trained facilitators, we tailor each course to meet the needs of the group. We would always include core topics such as the sequence of labour, self-help techniques, pain relief, induction, caesarean section, assisted birth, and feeding and caring for a newborn baby.

As specially trained facilitators, we encourage group participation through discussion and activities so yes, our courses are interactive! Couples are also able to ask questions throughout. By using a range of teaching activities, the formation of friendship for support is promoted.

Some couples are not keen on attending an interactive group with other people so we are also able to offer 1-2-1 sessions at a teacher’s home or from the comfort of your own home.

We use a number of different venues in Norwich and the surrounding areas as well as Bungay. They have all been carefully selected for their location, facilities and comfort.

As you are considered to have reached full term at 37 weeks, we recommend that you complete a course prior to your 37th week. We are very happy to help with course selection.

We offer a variety of formats in a selection of venues around Norwich and also in Bungay. Prices vary depending on the length of the course, but they range between £102 for a twelve hour course and £136 for a sixteen hour course.

All our courses include a two hour reunion with the teacher and others who attended the course.

We also offer 1-2-1 sessions for mum and birth partner when they would prefer not to be part of a group or their lifestyle/work patterns means it would be difficult to attend all the sessions on a full course. These are priced at £35 per hour plus a contribution towards travel costs if held at the client’s home.

An NHS Pathway to Parenthood course is eight hours in length made up of two hours with a midwife, two with the children’s centre and four with a health visitor often delivered in a seminar style and typically with double or treble the number of couples that attend classes with us.

In contrast, our courses are between 12 and 16 hours long, usually have six to eight couples attending and are interactive. We have the time to devote to you and your individual needs which will help you to prepare for your journey to parenthood emotionally as well as physically and practically.

Our courses cover all aspects of pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. Our aim is for you to finish our courses feeling fully prepared, informed and empowered to make the best choices for you and your baby armed with a wealth of helpful, practical knowledge.

Our facilitation skills mean that no two courses are the same; we don’t follow a prescribed list but start with a framework and build on that as we discuss what’s important to the women and their birth partners.

Following discussion and activities on the course, we hope parents–to-be will enjoy straightforward births using the skills and knowledge they learn in our classes and those who have medical intervention will feel better prepared and informed, helping them to understand their experience.

Most couples form a support network and continue to meet up for many years.

As qualified NCT antenatal teachers, we are able to offer comprehensive Signature style antenatal courses. A 16 hour course with About Birth & Babies is priced at £136 which is approximately £50 cheaper than the equivalent course with the NCT.

Being independent, we are able to take a more practical and modern approach to teaching, particularly around the practicalities of returning to work and sharing childcare.

We have the autonomy to offer a more personalised service than a national organisation and flexibility in terms of course formats, prices, venues and partnership working.

We also consider our team to be a particularly friendly and caring group who will go that extra mile to support you.
